A diploma program in telecomm tech and offers a flexible credential designed for a wide variety of careers within the telecommunications industry. To enroll, the only requirement is to have a high school-level education. Students take up to one year of study to develop the analytical-thinking, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills necessary to be successful telecomm technicians. Hands-on training in a lab setting is included in such programs to learn the technical skills and knowledge necessary for the trade. Graduates often complete up-to-five-year apprenticeships and/or extensive on-the-job training when they find employment.

Employment Outlook and Salary Information

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), telecommunications line installers and repairs were expected to experience employment growth of 6% between 2014 and 2024 ( Wired telecommunications carriers were the industry that had the highest employment for this occupation in 2014. The BLS also reported that telecommunications line installers and repairers earned a median annual salary of $52,920 as of May 2015.

Continuing Education Information

Graduates may find employment immediately after graduating, although they do receive extensive on-the-job training. They may also be required to complete apprenticeships, which can last up to five years. Additional safety or industry training may be offered through employers, unions, or equipment manufacturers.

Although additional training may be available for those interested in advancement, most techs earn promotions or advancement with work experience and working up the ladder. Some may advance to cable stringers or installers and then to journeymen positions. As they gain more experience, they may also obtain positions as trainers or supervisors.

Diploma programs in telecomm technology provide students with the skills to maintain, fix, and work with telecommunications equipment and tools. In addition to on-the-job training, most employers require that graduates enter an apprenticeship with an experience technician for up to five years.
