Essential Information

Master's degree programs in diplomacy provide students with an understanding of the theory and principles of diplomacy, conflict resolution and negotiation. Graduate students in diplomacy programs gain background knowledge of the political and cultural influences affecting today's international environment. Students learn about historically notable international conflicts and resolutions as well as current international dilemmas.

Courses teach students to view international relations through various perspectives in order to better understand the most effective methods of diplomacy for particular situations. Students often partake in critical thinking exercises, group discussions and individual research. They may be allowed to focus their studies on a particular concentration, such as international terrorism or international commerce. Some schools offer their programs online, enabling students to continue working while attending school.

Employment Outlook and Salary Information

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) doesn't include employment outlook information for policy administrators, diplomats or ambassadors. It does, however, include foreign services directors in its category for top executives. These executives are projected to have an average growth of 6% over the 2014-2024 decade (www.bls.gov). The U.S. Department of State noted in 2015 that senior foreign service officers' salaries varied based on education and experience (www.state.gov); they earned between $121K-$183K.

Certification Options

Professionals working in the field of diplomacy have few certification options. Often, a degree or career in the field speaks to professional competency more than a certification can. One organization that offers resources in the field is the International Diplomacy Council.

Diplomacy programs at the graduate level focus on the different factors that influence local and foreign relations. Students are trained through theoretical lessons and practical exercises in addition to independent studies.
