Distance Learning Metrology Degree Program Information

Learn about online degree programs with metrology courses. Get an overview of the program types, requirements and course descriptions available for this field.

Essential Information

Online degree programs in metrology, or the science of measurement, are rare, but can be found at the associate's degree level. A metrology degree often can be completed entirely through online study, with students viewing lectures and downloading class materials at their convenience. Some schools require that students take exams with a proctor.

Courses in a metrology program teach students about the types of equipment used for precision measurements as well as its calibration and maintenance. The basic principles of measurement of objects and distance are covered. Students also learn about international and national quality standards. Other degree programs that cover metrology courses include quality assurance, engineering and electronics technology.

Associate's Degree in Metrology

Metrology is the science of measurement. Online degrees specifically focused in metrology are uncommon; however, an associate's degree in the subject is available. Students can develop skills in precision measurement and electronics for careers in industry. More commonly, distance learning degree programs in quality assurance, engineering and electronics technology can include study of metrology. The principles of metrology are often needed in quality assurance fields to ensure that products are meeting standards.

Program Information and Requirements

Before enrolling in an online associate's degree program, students must have a high school diploma or GED. Some schools offer online tutoring. Classes may require exams to be proctored.

Class discussions with fellow students and faculty take place using email and online forums. Personal computers should have updated browsers and operating systems. Students may need speakers and a printer.

List of Common Associate's Level Metrology Courses

Students must satisfy general education requirements for the associate's degree by taking classes in humanities, public speaking, psychology and economics. In addition to several courses on physical and dimensional metrology, students study related subjects such as physics, microcomputers, electronic test instruments and digital electronics.

Physical Metrology

This course describes the instruments and standards used to measure density, hardness, temperature, temperature, humidity, pressure vacuum, flow and weight. Students are informed of proper equipment care and calibration.

Dimensional Metrology

In this course, students learn about the measurement of dimensions, including surface-related measurements, linear measurements and angular measurements. This information is used to measure the size of objects as well as distances. Subjects of study include statistics, gauging, tolerances and traceability.

Quality Systems

Students here become familiar with national and international standards of quality. This course discusses registration, registrar selection and register maintenance. Other topics include relevant statistics, error analysis and safety.

Career Information

Graduates of online metrology programs may be prepared for entry-level quality assurance positions in manufacturing. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (www.bls.gov), inspectors, testers, sorters, samplers, and weighers earned a mean annual wage of $39,410 in May 2015.

Continuing Education Information

Students seeking additional training can progress to a bachelor's degree. Bachelor's degrees in metrology are rare, but Bachelor of Science in Quality Assurance programs are available online and often offer metrology courses. Other degree programs which may build upon metrology study include engineering and manufacturing technology.

Associate's degree programs in metrology can typically be completed entirely online, with proctored exams being the only in-person requirement. Coursework covers various physical measurements, such as density, hardness and temperature, as well as dimensional measurements like statistics and students can choose to go on to a bachelor's program in quality assurance for further education.
