Essential Information

Online Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership programs are available at a few schools. Students can complete these graduate programs entirely online, or they may pursue a hybrid program that mixes online and on-site courses. To enroll in one of these programs, candidates must either already hold a graduate degree in education or be employed in an educational leadership position, such as a superintendent or principal. The program ends with a dissertation on an educational leadership topic.

Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership

A Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership program is for school and educational administrators who want to train for greater professional responsibility and obtain the skills and knowledge necessary to be effective leaders. These programs prepare educational administrators to transform their learning communities and to inspire the people beneath them to become lifelong learners.

Program Requirements and Information

These programs are structured to take about two years to complete. Because schools typically recognize that the students in these programs are working professionals with limited study time available, they will often allow students to take significantly longer to complete the program. The first half of the program is usually devoted to classes, with the second half set aside for the student to complete his or her dissertation.

The technology requirements necessary to complete this type of program vary greatly from school to school. Some schools require that students access the online classroom via a particular Internet browser; others require that they use a computer with a specific operating system where they install particular types or brands of software. These programs often utilize video, live chat rooms and discussion boards, so students must ensure their Internet connection and machine are fast enough and equipped to handle this type of content delivery.

Common Courses

The classes for these programs fall into one of two categories; they are either classes pertaining to the researching and writing of a dissertation or classes pertaining to educational issues. Below are some examples of the types of classes offered in these programs.

Educational Issues

An educational issues class explores the current issues in education that can affect how students learn and their overall educational experience. Areas such as diversity, politics and culture may be discussed.

Qualitative Research

This type of class may teach students about field studies, interview techniques and various modes of research. The course is meant to prepare students to research their dissertations.

Leadership

Students taking a leadership class may look at leadership from both a theoretical and a practical standpoint while instructing on its application in the school setting. Discussion may take place on subjects such as decision-making and dealing with change within educational organizations.

Career Information

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projected that postsecondary educational administration positions would grow faster than average - about nine percent - from 2014 to 2024 (www.bls.gov). However, the organization also predicted excellent job prospects during that period due to the anticipated rise in enrollment in online schools and the lack of applicants for these positions. In its report on 2015 salaries, the BLS indicated that elementary and secondary education administrators earned a median yearly wage of about $90,410.

Continuing Education Information

Depending on the state, district or school, graduates may need to seek new certification after completing a doctoral degree program. Such information can be found through the local Department of Education.

There are online programs available for a Doctor of Education degree in Educational Leadership that will take you at least two years to obtain but may take longer, depending on the amount of time it takes to complete your dissertation. This program requires completion of classes that relate to educational issues and those focused on dissertation research.
