Essential Information

An electroencephalograph (EEG) technologist, also referred to as an electroneurodiagnostic technologist, uses special equipment to measure electrical activity in the brain therby contributing to the diagnosis of neurological disorders. Students interested in working as EEG technologists can enroll in an Associate of Applied Science in Electroneurodiagnostic Technology program, which provides them with the education and training necessary to monitor electrical activity in a human's brain and nervous system. Graduates can qualify to apply for national certification through the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists.

Students will need a high school diploma or GED to enroll in these two-year programs. Having an aptitude for mathematics, biology, chemistry, and physics is often recommended. The curriculum will usually include clinical rotations as part of the degree.

Associate's Degree in EEG Technology

Laboratory experiences and classroom lectures make up the courses in an associate's degree program in EEG technology. Most programs also call for a few general education courses such as mathematics, social studies, and communications. Other than medical ethics, core courses include:

  • Biological chemistry
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Introduction to electroencephalography
  • Neurophysiology
  • EEG equipment
  • EEG practicum

Employment Outlook and Salary Info

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics lists EEG technologists among health technologists and technicians who are not otherwise categorized. In May 2015, there were 104,020 workers in this category. They earned a mean annual wage of $45,730 that same year. The industries with the highest levels of employment were hospitals and outpatient care centers.

Certification and Continuing Education

The American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET) offers certification for EEG technologists. Continuing education opportunities and re-certification classes in EEG technology are available through the American Society of Electroneurodiagnostic Technologists.

An EEG technology associate's degree prepares graduates for work in healthcare monitoring equipment and reporting the results to physicians. Professional certification is available for those working in the field.
