Essential Information

Individuals interested in studying electrical science at the college level might consider enrolling in a 4-year bachelor's degree program in electrical engineering. These programs can prepare graduates to become electrical and electronics engineers who design and test electrical systems and products in a wide range of industries. Bachelor's degree programs in physics can also prepare students to work as electrical engineers or to find work in other areas of scientific research and management. Students should have a high school diploma and be prepared to take pre-calculus courses to be considered for admission.

Bachelor's Degree Programs in Electrical Engineering

Students learn about the electrical design process from research to routine design changes. They can prepare for careers in digital signal processing, photonics and control instrumentation by learning about networking, electronic circuitry and lasers and can also learn about thermodynamics, voltage and rates of electrical response in a given network. Other coursework includes:

  • Calculus
  • Control systems
  • Electromagnetics
  • Logic design
  • Statistics

  • Telecommunications Technologies

Bachelor's Degree Programs in Physics

These students learn about the interaction between the movement of matter and energy over time in order to solve problems in mechanics, energy transfer and optics. They can study many of the same topics that engineering students study, including:

  • Calculus
  • Thermodynamics
  • Communication technologies
  • Renewable energy
  • Quantum mechanics
  • Light and sound waves

Popular Career Options

Because physics programs train students to use analytical thinking skills, students find chemistry and engineering jobs in the materials science, automotive and electrical industries. Bachelor's program graduates can be eligible to work as:

  • Electronics technicians
  • Semiconductor market researchers
  • Technical managers

Employment Outlook and Salary Information

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment opportunities for electrical and electronics engineers were expected to experience little or no change from 2014-2024 (www.bls.gov). A projected increase in international competition for these jobs has been anticipated to hamper domestic job growth in this sector. The BLS reports that the 178,580 electrical engineering professionals employed in May 2015 earned a mean annual salary of $97,340.

Continuing Education

Students interested in furthering their electrical engineering studies are able to apply to master's and doctoral degree programs. Serious candidates for these programs commonly have GPAs higher than a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Interested students are able to apply for admission into master's and doctoral programs in physics. Those with a background in electrical science are able to study electrical engineering as it applies to the physics of space, optics and materials, among other disciplines.

Pursuing a degree in electrical engineering or physics will allow an individual to enter the field of electrical science, which is quite lucrative though not currently experience high job growth.
