Electronic sales representatives play an important role in helping a store meet its sales goals. They must be knowledgeable in electronics and make themselves approachable to customers so that they can answer any questions thoroughly and accurately. They must seize opportunities for potential sales and help customers find products that meet their needs. Electronic sales representatives make customers excited about the electronic products they sell by explaining product features, performing demonstrations, mentioning sales, and promoting the value of their products. They may be required to document sales by creating and updating records of customer profiles. Additional job duties may include greeting customers, stocking shelves, taking inventory, marking price tags, setting up displays, and processing payments. Electronic sales representatives must also watch out for thefts and notify security or police if they see any suspicious activity.

Electronic Sales Representative Requirements

There are usually no formal education requirements to become an electronic sales representative beyond a high school diploma or its equivalent. Most of the skills needed are learned on the job. On-the-job training can last a few days or a few months, and usually covers the topics of customer service, store policies and procedures, cash register operation, security, and technical details of electronic products. A larger store is more likely to have a formal training program, whereas a smaller store is more likely to have the more experienced employees train the new employees. Although on-the-job training is usually sufficient, a college degree in any subject can help an electronic sales representative move into more advanced positions, such as management.

Some employers may require electronic sales representatives to have previous retail experience. Such experience can be help a person acquire the skills necessary to sell consumer electronics, such as verbal communication, listening, customer service, sales, persuasion, and general math skills. Successful electronic sales representatives are ones who proactively go after sales, and provide accurate and useful information to customers. Either formal or informal on-the-job training is a typical requirement when starting out, and a higher degree isn't normally required unless you'd like to pursue a supervisory or management role.
