Job Description of an Electronic Service Technician
Electronic service technicians install, fix and maintain a variety of home and office electronic equipment. They often work for service companies, distributors, department stores, manufacturers or repair shops. While technicians who work in a shop assist customers who bring in equipment that needs repair, field technicians travel in service vehicles to make house calls or visit offices to repair equipment, bringing their tools with them.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that electrical and electronics repairers of commercial and industrial equipment earn a median annual income of $58,110, as of May 2018. A 1% decline is expected in the employment of electrical and electronics installers and repairers during the 2018-2028 decade, largely due to more reliable equipment and improved service tools that limit the need for more technicians.
Duties of an Electronic Service Technician
As part of their maintenance duties, technicians may inspect and test electronic equipment using multimeters, circuit testers and oscilloscopes. In diagnosing a repair problem, technicians may first use routine checks or make sure that there are no defective parts. If these first steps yield no results, they may then consult manufacturer's instructions or use test equipment to isolate the problem. Field technicians may ultimately have to bring broken equipment into the shop if it cannot be fixed on location.
Requirements to Become an Electronic Service Technician
Electronic service technicians may only be required to have service experience to qualify for these positions; however, some employers require some formal training. Many technical schools and colleges offer certificates and associate's degree programs that teach the skills necessary for this career, such as a electronic service technician certificate or Associate of Technology degree programs. These programs often include coursework in electronics, electronic manufacturing, amplifiers, transistors and schematics.
Some employers may only hire certified electronic service technicians. Certification programs are offered by different organizations, for example the Electronics Technicians Association offers several basic certifications, such as the Associate Certified Electronics Technician (CETa) credential, and many specialized certifications, such as the Biomedical Electronics Technician (BET) and the Consumer Electronics Service Technician (CEST) credentials. The International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians also offers several certifications, including the Associate Level Electronics Certified Electronics Technician and the Electronics Systems Associate (ESA) for technicians seeking advancement.
Electronic service technicians repair electrical products such as televisions and stereos.
