Essential Information

Marketing is the process of researching and identifying a market and positioning a product for success. New graduates in this field might join a team on a marketing or advertising campaign or work with a sales force. Internships completed along with a bachelor's degree are a key component of landing a first job in this profession.

Career Options

Marketing majors can expect odd hours, strict goals, and high stress throughout their careers, but especially during the entry-level phase. The marketing profession is very performance-oriented, and individuals just beginning their careers will need to prove themselves. Very stringent goals and high expectations are the norm, and the flexibility to adjust and correct problems under a deadline is needed.

A graduate of a marketing bachelor's degree program might initially be hired in an administrative assistant, market researcher, customer service representative or salesperson in a marketing or advertising department. These positions can give the graduate a foothold to position him or herself for advancement to a position like marketing specialist or market research analyst. Let's look at these jobs in more detail.

Job Duties

Marketing Specialist

Marketing specialists usually work under a marketing manager as part of a group assigned to the job of marketing a product or brand. A marketing team works with product developers and upper-level management to choose a target market and set a price for a product or service. Marketing specialists must then employ sales, promotions, and advertising techniques to ensure the success of the product or brand. Once a marketing specialist becomes well-versed in a company's product, he or she might work with sales people to train, support, and improve their approach and materials.

Market Research Analyst

Market research analysts research market conditions in local, regional, or national areas, in addition to gathering information to determine potential sales of a company's goods or services. These individuals also obtain information on competitors' marketing efforts and might help create marketing campaigns.

Salary and Job Outlook

Pay for marketing professionals varies based on level of education, experience, demonstrated performance, and industry. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that market research analysts and marketing specialists earned an annual average wage of $70,030 as of May 2015. For the decade from 2014-2024, the BLS predicted a 19% percent increase in job opportunities for market research analysts and marketing specialists, which was much faster than average employment growth compared to other occupations.

In summary, marketing specialist and market research analyst are two entry-level jobs for marketing majors. Job growth for both of these careers is expected to be above average in the coming years.
