Mowing, watering, fertilizing and aerating the field are all a part of the requirements for the groundskeeper. In addition, they make sure that the soil beneath the turf can properly drain, as well as make sure that the soil can support the grasses used on the fields. Disinfecting synthetic turf is also required to ensure good hygiene on the play surface.

Requirements in Parks and other Recreation Facilities

Lawns, trees, shrubs and grass are all important areas for a groundskeeper to water and prune in parks and recreational facilities. It is also important for the groundskeeper to take care of weeds, maintain pest control and trim around flowerbeds and walks. Keeping parking lots, sidewalks and other public spaces free of litter, snow or ice is another aspect of the job. The groundskeeper will make sure that playgrounds, buildings and other landscaping fixtures are maintained as well. The groundskeeper may inspect buildings, make repairs and keep everything freshly painted.

Requirements for Golf Course Greenskeepers

Greenskeepers, those who specialize in maintaining golf courses, relocate holes on putting greens so as to prevent uneven wear and tear on the course. This also adds interest and a fresh challenge to the game that many individuals who use the course enjoy. They keep benches, canopies, ball washers and tee markers in their proper conditions and freshly painted.

Requirements for Cemetery Caretakers

In cemeteries, caretakers maintain and keep graves in proper condition and free from debris. He or she will plant flowers and care for trees and shrubs. Mowing the lawn and applying fertilizer when needed are other requirements for groundskeepers who choose to work in cemeteries. Salary for Groundskeepers

The salary for a groundskeeper varies based on geographical location, experience, management and the type of grounds. For example, greenskeepers might see a lower salary depending on where they work. Michigan has a shorter golf season than Florida, which would affect the outcome of an individual's salary.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicted an increase much faster than the average in jobs for grounds maintenance workers from 2019-2029. In May 2019, the BLS reported that workers in the 90th percentile or higher earned $65,440 or more per year, whereas the bottom 10th percentile earned $22,630 or less per year.

The job duties of an estate caretaker vary depending on where they work, from cemeteries to parks to golf courses. Caretakers need to have the necessary skills to ensure that all facilities remain in peak condition; they gain these skills through on-the job training.
