First Aid Diploma
American Red Cross First Aid offers certification. The American Red Cross teaches first responders comprehensive first aid skills. Courses may be customized to meet individual needs, and they also conform to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements in the workplace. Certification is specifically offered for the cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) portion of the class.
The American Heart Association (AHA) offers courses covering first aid and CPR that are appropriate for the workplace, childcare settings and various community environments. Heartsaver courses offer specialization in pediatrics, airway management or bloodborne pathogens. The first portion of the Heartsaver course is available online.
Topics that may be covered in the training courses include:
- First aid
- CPR for adults and children and caring for infants
- AED (automated external defibrillator)
- Broken and sprained bones
An online refresher course is required every two years in order to maintain CPR certification. Those who are interested in teaching others first aid and CPR skills may enroll in an instructor course; candidates must already be trained and certified in first aid. Heartsaver certification is valid for a period of two years. In order to renew, students must complete an online refresher course.
First aid training programs are available for students of any age and experience level. While a diploma isn't granted upon completion of a first aid class, individuals receive certification, which requires continuing education to maintain.
