Online GED Test Prep Options
Because the GED test is a comprehensive seven-and-a-half-hour exam with four separate sections on language arts, math, science and social studies, you might need to invest some time studying before taking the test. If you're getting ready to take the GED, there are different online study resources that can help you prepare such as practice tests, online prep courses and multi-media study packages.
Official GED Practice Test and Sample Questions
Sample questions, free practice lessons, and GED Ready, an official practice test, are available on the GED Testing Service website at GED.com. GED Ready is half the length of the GED test and is available in English and Spanish. GED Ready lets you know if you are prepared to pass the actual test, and if not, it will tell you which areas you need to review. The fee for GED Ready is $6 for each test section, or $24 for the full test.
Fee-Based Online Prep Services
Some online GED test prep services charge a fee for access to course materials and instructional support. The tuition or subscription fee may also include access to a GED instructor by e-mail. These prep courses are typically self-paced, but they may be time-limited. An additional fee may be required to continue accessing the course material after you've passed your limit. You can generally take advantage of prep services in both English and Spanish.
In addition to computer-graded practice tests and study materials, some GED prep sites offer test readiness assessments, customized study plans and self-scoring for the essay portion of the practice test. Fee-based sites may also offer a free demonstration allowing users to take a portion of a practice test before deciding to subscribe or enroll in the test prep course.
Fast Forward, a GED prep course developed by Kentucky Educational Television, is an online prep course that offers personalized study plans, step-by-step interactive lessons, instructional videos and practice questions. A subscription to Fast Forward also includes vouchers to take each of the four GED Ready practice tests. A 6-month mobile bundle package that lets you access Fast Forward study materials on a smart phone or tablet as well as a computer is available for $69.95. You can also purchase a one-year subscription to Fast Forward for $129 on the Fast Forward website, www.ketfastforward.org.
Kaplan also offers an online GED prep course that provides a diagnostic test, practice questions, instructional videos and online support from teachers. The self-paced course provides three months of access to study materials for an enrollment fee of $129.
Free Online GED Prep courses
Some online GED prep courses are available free of charge. The test prep coursework is self-paced and may include interactive lessons, assessment tests and links to other study materials. There are now 17 states using the i-Pathways online prep program. Typically, GED candidates gain free access to i-Pathways when they enroll for GED prep through a local adult education center. In some cases, access to i-Pathways requires a commitment of a certain number of weekly online study hours.
Many people prepare for the GED with workbooks that provide diagnostic tests, lessons and practice tests. Several popular print prep books now come with online support that provides additional instruction and practice tests. Peterson's Master the GED Test and Kaplan's GED Premier Test 2015 are two widely-used GED study resources with online instruction and practice materials.
Beware of Disreputable Sites
When choosing an online GED test prep course, be sure to research your options carefully. Some sites promising free GED test prep services actually redirect users to for-pay sites or online high school diploma sites. You can find reputable GED test prep resources by consulting user reviews, consumer review sites, educational organizations or the Better Business Bureau before signing up or paying for an online prep program.
