Hospital Machine Repair Education and Training Program Options

Hospital machine and equipment repairers usually need specialized training. An associate's degree in biomedical equipment technology provides students with a general background in equipment and systems repair and teaches them how to apply that knowledge specifically to medical equipment.

Essential Information

Students enrolled in an associate's degree program in biomedical equipment technology learn to install, service and maintain medical equipment. The 2-year program teaches students how to repair electrical systems, digital circuits, industrial controls, and basic electronics. Students also learn to perform preventive maintenance checks and make routine operational systems checks. It also provides students with an introduction to the healthcare industry as well as to the common diagnostic and treatment procedures that involve medical instrumentation. Graduates may be able to earn credentials from professional organizations. A high school diploma or GED is required for admissions.

Associate's Degree in Hospital Machine Repair

Many of the courses found within an associate's degree program in biomedical equipment technology are instructional in nature and provide students with how-to training in various aspects of system repair. Some specific examples include:

  • Industrial controls
  • Electric circuits
  • Mechanical tools
  • Human anatomy and physiology
  • Microcomputer applications
  • Biomedical electronic systems and equipment design

Employment Outlook and Salary Info

Medical equipment repairers can find work in hospitals and healthcare facilities but can also work for biomedical equipment manufacturers and testing companies. Medical equipment repairers are expected to see employment growth of 6% from 2014 through 2024, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS, www.bls.gov). Medical equipment repairers earned a median annual salary of $46,340 as of May 2015, reports the BLS.

Certification and Continued Education

Hospital machine equipment repairers can gain certification from a few different organizations, including the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI). AAMI actually offers credentials for general biomedical technicians as well as credentials for technicians who specialize in certain types of biomedical equipment. Individuals must pass an examination to gain certification in the field.

To start a career within hospital machine repair, certification is often required. An associate's degree within the field will prepare graduates with the knowledge they need for the position.
