Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) is a public, 4-year university that offers certificates, associate's, bachelor's, master's, doctoral and professional degree programs. This school has a total enrollment of more than 30,000 students. The School of Physical Education and Tourism Management contains the Department of Tourism, Conventions and Event Management (TCEM), which offers certificates, undergraduate and graduate programs geared towards hospitality management.
The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Tourism, Conventions and Event Management program covers the fundamental skills needed to manage tourism operations, events, conventions, catering and human resources in the hospitality industry. Students learn financial accounting for the service industries, management principles and analytical skills. Core courses include tourism, development and management of attractions, marketing, event catering and hospitality law. The curriculum of the Master of Science in Event Tourism program offers courses in event marketing, meeting management and research in recreation. A seminar in global tourism is included.
Relevant certificate programs offered by the department include one in hospitality management. Coursework addresses facilities management, convention sales, lodging management, food service operations and beverage management. The Beverage Management Certificate program provides students with a foundational understanding of the types of beverages, spirits, beers and wines typically used in restaurant settings. The Events Management Certificate offers study in events planning and production practices.
Students of the Tourism Planning and Development Certificate program take courses in travel trends, tourism policy, marketing and tourism planning. In the Sports Tourism Development Certificate program, students learn about sport marketing, journalism and event management. Finally, the Cultural Heritage Tourism Certificate curriculum allows students to take coursework in areas of cultural attractions, travel and food. All programs include an industry internship.
