Continuing Education and Certification Information

Hospitality professionals hoping to advance their careers may wish to earn an undergraduate or graduate degree in a hospitality-related field. Many employers prefer candidates have a bachelor's degree, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Programs at the associate's, bachelor's, and master's degree levels are available in hospitality management, travel, and tourism.

Professional associations offer the opportunity for continuing education and certification to professionals in the field. For example, those who want to work in meeting planning can seek out a Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) designation from the Convention Industry Council. The requirements for this designation include at least three years of professional meeting experience and the passing of an exam.

The Society of Government Meeting Professionals (SGMP) offers the Certified Government Meeting Professional credential. As with the CMP credential, it is not required in the field but may be helpful. To qualify, an individual must be a member of the organization for at least a year. To become a member, a candidate has to show employment within a federal, state, or local government or firm that works with the government. Candidates also must take a three-day course and pass an exam.

A hospitality marketing certificate program can prepare students for entry-level marketing roles with hotels, restaurants, and similar organizations. Graduates of these programs may also go on to pursue bachelor's degrees or voluntary certification, both of which may increase job prospects.
