Holistic nutrition programs cover the science behind holistic nutrition, including biochemical profiles, anti-oxidants, health issues, allergies and pathologies. A variety of certificate and degree programs are available to obtain this training. Not all programs focus exclusively on holistic nutrition, however - some programs focus more broadly on holistic health with nutrition coursework included.

School Selection Criteria

Consider the following when choosing a holistic nutrition program:

  • Along with courses on the elements of holistic nutrition, students may want to seek a comprehensive program that will offer instruction in business development, customer relations, holistic health and lifestyles.
  • Schools that prepare the student to take the Holistic Nutrition Credentialing Board's Board Examination will better qualify the student for positions in the field.
  • Students should consider time constraints when choosing whether to take online or classroom courses.
  • Students should look for programs that offer real-world training opportunities, such as supervised counseling experiences or internships.

Certificate in Holistic Nutrition

A high school diploma or GED is required for admission to such programs. These 12- to 16-week programs focus on nutritional and lifestyle counseling, as well as basic scientific concepts. Popular diet trends such as fasting, raw food diets and juicing are also covered.

Bachelor of Science in Holistic Nutrition

Prerequisites for this program are a high school diploma or GED. This program combines general education courses such as English composition, science, math, history, humanities and fine arts with courses focused on holistic nutrition. These are typically 120-credit programs with 60 credits in general education and 60 credits in holistic nutrition.

Master of Science in Holistic Nutrition

The Master of Science degree program usually includes high-level study of holistic nutrition. Prerequisites include a bachelor's degree with at least 25 credits in certain holistic nutrition fundamentals. These courses can be taken separately if the student's bachelor's degree program didn't include holistic nutrition courses.

For students who are interested in studying the science behind diet and want to pursue a career in nutritional counseling or a related field, there are both undergraduate and graduate-level training options.
