Employment Outlook and Salary Information

A graduate with a diploma in human resources may work as a generalist or specialize in a certain field such as benefits administration or training. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment for human resources specialists is expected to grow 5% between 2014 and 2024, which is average for all U.S. occupations (www.bls.gov). This growth is attributed in part to a rise in the complexity of health care and employment law and regulation.

The BLS also noted compensation for individuals in the HR field may depend on their specialty. In May 2015, HR specialists had a median annual salary of $63,710. Also in 2015, compensation and benefits specialists earned a median annual wage of $65,100, while training and development specialists earned a median annual salary of $62,460. (www.bls.gov).

Continuing Education and Professional Certification

Individuals with a diploma in human resources may continue their education and earn a bachelor's degree. According to the BLS, a graduate degree is becoming the industry standard. Because regulations regarding employment are constantly changing, HR specialists and managers must keep their knowledge current by completing continuing education courses.

Many organizations offer certifications to HR professionals who meet educational and work experience requirements and pass written exams. The Society for Human Resource Management (www.shrm.org) and the HR Certification Institute grants certification at several levels. The International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans offers designations in three specialty areas. It also offers the designation of Certified Employee Benefits Specialist.

There are a number of degrees available to those individuals with a diploma in Human Resource Management. While the basic coursework is the same, specific certifications can help prepare you for a more specialized area within the field.
