School Selection Criteria
Consider the following when looking for infant massage therapy schools:
- Massage therapy programs can be found as 12-month certificate programs or 2-year associate degree programs
- Evening options are available for students in need of schedule flexibility.
- Students should check the options within the curriculum before enrolling since programs for practitioners don't offer always offer training in infant massage.
Certification Training in Infant Massage
This short-term training program prepares students to take a certification exam conferred by Infant Massage USA; a division of the International Association of Infant Massage. The program culminates in a certification exam that leads to the credential of Certified Educator of Infant Massage. In this 4-day training program, students learn techniques such as stroke, touch, and massage.
Certificate in Massage Therapy
Certificate programs in massage therapy are often comprised of three semesters. The program combines prenatal massage with infant massage therapy. Massage students receive training in stroke and touch techniques, as well as how to read cues from infants. Prior to graduation, students must complete an internship for hands-on training. Students also learn techniques for Swedish massage, reflexology, aroma therapy, sports massage, and Chinese medicine.
Associate Degree in Massage Therapy
An associate degree in massage therapy provides students with infant massage courses designed to prepare graduates to practice. Graduates of an associate degree program are qualified to sit for the certification exam offered by the National Certification Board of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB). Students complete general education requirements, but are also exposed to courses in anatomy, pathology, hot stone massage, sports massage, and deep tissue massage.
Infant massage therapy is not a stand-alone degree or focus, but it is included in some massage therapy programs. If you are interested in infant massage, be sure to look for it in the curricula of a massage therapy program before enrolling.
