Essential Information

A master's degree in Internet engineering is typically earned in two years, although some accelerated programs may be completed in one year. Voluntary certifications may be available to experienced graduates. To enroll, applicants must have a bachelor's degree in network administration, electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field. They must also have taken courses in statistics and computer programming prior to applying.

Master's Degree in Internet Engineering

The program content engages such topics as network implementation, distributed computing, software engineering, and interface design. Some Internet engineering programs consist of 10-12 required courses without electives and others of 3-5 core courses with multiple electives. Students without an adequate background in programming, math, and data analysis may have to complete these courses in addition to the established curriculum. Most of these graduate programs also require a final project. Common course topics in an Internet engineering master's degree program include:

  • Signal analysis
  • Network architecture convergence
  • Network software development
  • Wireless network integration
  • Interface design
  • Multimedia engineering

Employment Outlook and Salary Info

Graduates of an Internet engineering master's degree program are primarily qualified to seek positions as network and computer systems administrators, network architects and network engineers. For the time period of 2018-2028, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projected employment of network and computer systems administrators to increase 5% and employment of network architects to increase also by 5% ( The BLS states that this growth will be driven by the need within governmental, business, and non-profit organizations to implement, upgrade, and manage their computer networks.

According to the BLS, network and computer systems administrators were reported to earn a median annual salary of $82,050 in May 2018. The BLS also stated that in that same year, computer network architects made a median annual salary of $109,020.

Continuing Education

Voluntary certifications for Internet and network engineers are available for Windows and Novell networks. Earning Microsoft MCSE certification requires passage of seven separate exams on network administration, design, and implementation and 1-2 years of experience working with Microsoft networks. Earning NetWare CNE certification entails passing five exams on network design, implementation, and administration.

A master's degree program in Internet engineering educates students in network software development, interface design, multimedia engineering, and other advanced networking and computer courses. Graduates have several career options such as network and computer systems administrator or network architect.
