In a certificate program that includes intranet programming, such as computer programming or web development, students learn to write programming for intranet applications and manage in-house networking systems. Students also learn how to install and work with different types of web servers, manage network security, and design web pages. Employment Outlook and Salary Information
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) predicted that employment of all types of computer programmers, including intranet programmers, would decline by 8% from 2014-2024 (www.bls.gov). The BLS said it expected that employers would continue the trend of companies outsourcing their programming jobs to workers in other countries where labor is cheaper. The median annual salary for a programmer was $79,530 as of May 2015, the BLS noted.
The BLS says job opportunities will be best for programmers who hold a bachelor's degree and who are familiar with a variety of programming languages. Some employers will also consider programmers with associate's degrees, according to the BLS. Many course credits from a certificate program may transfer into credits for a higher degree. In addition to possibly pursuing an advanced degree, programmers should also keep up with new technologies, the BLS says, such as writing programming applications for mobile devices.
Certificates in computer programming or web development can prepare students for jobs in intranet programming, however with employment opportunities expected to decline in the 2014 to 2024 decade prospective programmers may want to earn a higher degree to be competitive.
