Kinesiotherapist Certification Information

Kinesiotherapy applies exercise science to physical therapy to increase strength, endurance and mobility. Kinesiotherapists work in sports medicine clinics, rehabilitation centers, hospitals, fitness centers and in private practice.

The American Kinesiotherapy Association (AKTA) is the body that encourages professional standards and advocates for the profession. The AKTA calls its process of professional recognition, registration, rather than certification.

Educational Requirements

The COPS-KT, or Council on Professional Standards for Kinesiotherapy, consists of a board of registration, a continuing competency board and an accreditation committee. The COPS-KT works with the AKTA, but is not part of it. To qualify to become a registered kinesiotherapist (RKT), one must complete a kinesiotherapy program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). CAAHEP accreditation is based on COPS-KT standards. A bachelor's degree program in kinesiotherapy takes four to five years to complete.

Clinical Internship Requirement

During or after completing an accredited kinesiotherapy program, students are required to complete 1000 supervised internship hours. The internship may be completed on campus or at an approved off-campus site. Hospitals and other treatment facilities that provide neurologic, psychiatric, geriatric, pediatric or orthopedic care, cardiac rehabilitation, wellness, fitness or post-rehabilitation programs are all included on the list of approved facilities.

A clinical internship must be supervised by an RKT. The RKT who supervises the internship must submit a letter of verification.

The Registration Examination

The registered kinesiotherapist examination is offered every six months. Students must submit a fee along with the application for the examination. After passing the examination, one is able to use the title of registered kinesiotherapist (RKT).

Salary and Career Outlook

According to an AKTA survey, most of the kinesiotherapists surveyed in 2017 earned $67,000 on average annually. Additionally, most of the kinesiotherapists surveyed worked at Department of Veteran's Affairs medical centers. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported the median salary for exercise physiologists, including kinesiotherapists, at $49,270 in May 2018. The BLS also projected a faster than average job growth of 10% from 2018 - 2028.
