Feb 18, 2011

While some college students know exactly what they want to do with their lives, others are less certain. If you are confused about what you want to study, or how to turn your degree choice into a career, you might be looking for some guidance. Learn how the career center at your school can help.

The services offered by career centers are usually totally free to students, and even to some recent graduates. If you don't know what in the world to do with yourself after graduation, the career center might be a good place for you to start looking for answers. At the center, you might be able to take quizzes and aptitude tests that can help point you in a direction that will suit you. You may also be able to read career profiles and get in touch with people in specific industries to learn more.

job seekers

Even if you know exactly what you want to do after you graduate, and you are confident that your current studies will make that goal a reality, the career center can help you. Resources here may reveal important steps you may not know about, or alternative careers that might better suit your interests. You could also learn about internships, summer jobs or other opportunities to build your resume before graduation.

Regardless of your plans after school, career centers have resources that can help all job seekers. You can stop in for help writing cover letters and preparing your resume. The center will likely have pamphlets and written guides on how to make an outstanding application package. You might even be able to show your resume and a sample cover letter to a career counselor for advice, or take part in a mock interview to see how your interviewing skills measure up.

career search

If you're planning on going to grad school rather than immediately entering the workforce, a career services office will likely have resources for you, too. The center might offer free test prep sessions or guides for the GRE, LSAT, MCAT and other graduate school standardized tests. You may also find advice for preparing grad school applications or get ideas on how to pay for graduate school.

Specific resources offered by a career center will likely vary by school. Instead of wondering how your career center can benefit you, why don't you stop in for a visit? All it will cost is your time, and you never know what kind of valuable information you could leave with.
