Training programs in this field may result in either a diploma or certificate and may even be available partially or fully online. The program content is similar in either case and can be completed in approximately one year. The curricula may focus on specific areas, such as boats and motorcycles, but the lessons can be applied to a wide variety of small-engine mechanics roles. In some instances, a high school diploma or its equivalent may be required as a prerequisite to enroll.
Lawnmower Repair Training
Through classroom lectures and hands-on shop training, students are introduced to the fundamental operations of small-engine machines. Throughout lessons, they are guided through diagnostic maintenance, repair and safety protocol. They may also learn how to develop effective work practices as maintenance technicians. Other common areas of study include:
- 2- and 4-cycle engine repair
- Power equipment transmission systems
- Transaxle repair and maintenance
- Small engine disassembly and reassembly
- Small engine electrical and fuel systems
- Engine tune-ups and ignition repair
Employment Outlook and Salary Information
Those who specialize in small-engine repair may find jobs with repair or retail shops, landscape companies, lawn equipment dealers and government agencies. The number of jobs was predicted to grow 6% from 2018-2028, which is as fast as the average. The BLS also reported that the national 2018 mean annual wage for outdoor power equipment mechanics was $36,940 (www.bls.gov).
Those wishing to advance in engine repair may eventually work with larger engines, either through on-the-job training or other training programs. For large-engine training, diesel, motorcycle and automobile engine repair and maintenance courses may be viable; these are also available through technical schools and community colleges.
Training in lawnmower repair teaches students how to repair and maintain the various systems involved in small engines. Further studies beyond the certificate and diploma level include on-job-training or courses in large-engine or diesel repair and maintenance.
