School Overview

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the Georgia Institute of Technology, and Ohio State University are three of the best schools in the nation to offer computer engineering graduate degrees. Both masters and doctoral degrees are offered, and each of these schools have been ranked not only by the U.S. News & World Report for their electrical/and or general engineering programs, but also by Times Higher Education. Depending upon their chosen school and program, students will learn about robotics and artificial intelligence and may have the opportunity to study abroad.

1. University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

School Highlight: In 2016, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in Champaign, Illinois, was ranked tied 36th among the top 100 world universities by Times Higher Education.

The University of Illinois ranked fifth in U.S. News & World Report's 2017 ranking of top U.S. graduate schools for computer engineering. The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) offers a Master of Science (M.S.), and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). Students pursuing a doctoral degree are urged to follow a separate course of study and must take a qualifying exam. The department's faculty conducts research in a number of ECE fields, including nanotechnology and biomedical imaging.

2. Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA

School Highlight: Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia, was sixth in U.S. News & World Report's 2017 ranking of top U.S. graduate schools for computer engineering.

In 2017, Times Higher Education placed the university tied for 33rd among the best 100 universities in the world. Graduate programs offered by Georgia Tech include a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE). One of the ECE department's ten research groups is computer systems and software. The research group covers topics in computer architecture, computer networks, and system software.

3. Ohio State University

School Highlight: The electrical and computer engineering department at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, has 58 faculty members, 20 of whom are Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) fellows.

U.S. News and World Report ranked Ohio State University 31st for its graduate and engineering programs for 2017. The university was tied for 72nd on the Times Higher Education list for the best universities in the world. The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering offers a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy in electrical and computer engineering.

Graduate students can choose between over a dozen specialty areas, including networking, computer and digital systems, and computer vision/image processing.
