Best Holistic Medicine Schools and Colleges

Undergraduate and graduate-level programs that take an alternative approach to medicine can be found at health-focused schools and 4-year universities. In addition to degrees and certificates, some schools also provide dual degree programs that allow students to train in additional subjects, such as acupuncture, physiology, and biophysics.

School Overviews

The following three schools represent some of the best programs in holistic medicine in the country. While both offer degree programs related to the field of holistic medicine, the programs at Bastyr and Everglades focus primarily on naturopathic medicine, and the programs available through Georgetown University use natural and holistic practices in conjunction with traditional, Western medicine. Bastyr and Everglades are notable for their wide ranging training that covers a variety of aspects of alternative medicine, whereas Georgetown was highly ranked by U.S. News and World Report for 2017.

Bastyr University

Bastyr University's naturopathic program helps to develop leaders in the growing field of natural medicine. Located in Kenmore, Washington, the School of Naturopathic Medicine at Bastyr offers a Naturopathic Doctor (N.D.) program. The N.D. program has similar curriculum and clinical training as an M.D. program and offers coursework in botanical medicine, spinal manipulation, and homeopathy. N.D. dual-degree programs are offered in areas such as a Master of Science in Acupuncture, Master of Science in Midwifery, and a Master of Public Health.

Georgetown University

The Department of Pharmacology & Physiology at Georgetown University hosts a plethora of diverse research programs that allow students the opportunity to acquire graduate degrees. Located in Washington, D.C., this university offers a Master of Science in Physiology degree with a Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) track. Some of the CAM modalities this program surveys include Ayurveda, homeopathy, massage therapy, and herbal medicine. Also offered is a Master of Science in Physiology with a science focus and a Special Master's Program in Physiology for pre-med students. Some elective courses in these programs cover holistic medicine topics as well, including medicinal plants and mind-body medicine. Georgetown was ranked #20 among national universities by U.S. News and World Report for 2017.

Everglades University

Everglades University, in Boca Raton, Florida, offers a Bachelor of Science in Alternative Medicine and a master's degree in Public Health Administration with a concentration in Complementary and Alternative Medicine, both available in online and on-campus formats. In the bachelor's degree program, students take general education courses along with a wide variety of alternative medicine-related courses, ranging from nutrition to health psychology to clinical decision-making. In the master's degree program, students take traditional public health courses in topics like public policy and epidemiology, as well as four courses focused specifically on alternative medicine. The program, which usually takes 12 months to complete, culminates in a final capstone course.
