Master of Business Administration (MBA) programs specialized in information systems provide students with the business knowledge and technical skill to work as a systems analyst, support expert or information technology consultant. Students in this program receive instruction on general business practices, as well as how to design and implement computer systems to assist a company's productivity and growth.

School Selection Criteria

While the coursework within these programs tends to be similar, there are differences between business schools that are important for prospective students to take into consideration.

  • Students should inquire about the current technology offered by the university, since recently upgraded computer systems or software programs are essential to staying abreast of new technology.
  • Students should consider whether they want to enroll in a program with a focus on global markets. Schools offering study-abroad programs and affiliations with schools located outside the U.S. provide additional outlets to gain global market experience.
  • Another consideration for choosing a degree program is the availability of internships and mentorship programs in information systems, as these programs allow students to gain real-world experience and can often lead to permanent employment after graduation.
  • Students who are interested in research or academic positions in the future may want to look into the research interests of the business school's faculty.

Master of Business Administration with an Information System Specialization

MBA programs typically require two years of study, consisting of a core of advanced business classes alongside concentration-specific information technology coursework. Summer internships are commonly required.

Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Science (MS) in Information Technology Dual Degree

In a dual degree program, students complete the requirements for one degree prior to beginning their studies on the second. There is no required order in which the degrees must be completed, and it can take up to four years to complete all program requirements. MBA program coursework provides instruction about the management of global businesses, projects and operations.

MBA in Information Systems programs give students the opportunity to pursue graduate-level studies in both business and IT, and some of the nation's top universities offer programs. An alternative option is a dual MBA / MS degree.
