Essential Information

Certificate, diploma and associate's programs in drafting and boat design typically focus on drafting software, machine drawing, electronic engineering and geometrics. Some of these programs also include specific marine drafting coursework. These programs are available at most technical schools, vocational schools and community colleges.

Undergraduate Certificate

Some schools offer courses in drafting through various certificate programs, such as the Certificate in Technical Studies (CTS) and the Technical Competency Area (TCA). Certificates are also offered in boat building, which include courses in marine drafting. Enrollment in these programs requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Students who are interested in marine drafting can receive the necessary training to enter into an entry-level position, such as engineering aide, through certificate programs. Undergraduate certificate programs encompass areas in fundamentals of drafting and designing. Additionally, throughout the boat building programs, students learn the basics of boat building while studying marine drafting. Training includes:

  • Connections and advances in designing and drafting
  • Drafting and technical arithmetic
  • Geometrics
  • Geometry
  • Graphic diagrams
  • Machine drawings and illustrations

Diploma in Drafting

Those interested in obtaining basic knowledge and skills in drafting may choose to pursue several types of diplomas. The Technical Diploma (TD) focuses on drafting and design technology and is available at community colleges, technical schools and vocational schools. A diploma in boat design is also available for those seeking education in marine drafting. Like with certificate programs, students need to have a high school diploma or equivalent. Studies in algebra, civic communication, composition of the English language, psychology and physics are explored through technical diploma programs. Students also gain expertise in philosophies of designing and essentials of structural designs. Boat design programs offer courses in marine drafting among other design courses such as:

  • Career development
  • Computer plans and sketches
  • Design and drafting essentials
  • Innovative drafting
  • Outlining and designing

Associate of Applied Science

Similar to certificates and diplomas, students can earn an associate degree while studying drafting. Obtaining an associate degree provides additional opportunities for employment. Usually, a minimum of a high school education is required to enter into an associate degree program. While exploring design and drafting courses, students also explore other areas. Studies may also include customer assistance and groundwork for self-employment. Other studies may include:

  • Electronic engineering
  • Design and building
  • Innovative designs
  • Marine drafting
  • Mechanical drafting
  • Tube drafting

Popular Career Options

Designers and drafting professionals who are interested in marine drafting may choose to pursue many different positions. Some career choices may include:

  • Boat designer
  • Independent drafter and designer
  • Small-craft designer
  • Yacht designer

Employment Outlook and Salary Information

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment for drafting positions was expected to have little or no change (0%) between 2018 and 2028. A BLS report of May 2018 also showed a median annual salary of drafters to be $55,550.

There are a number of education paths an aspiring marine drafter may choose from, including certificate, diploma or associate's programs in drafting or boat design. While employment openings for drafters are expected to grow slower than average, prospective drafters with a good understanding of CAD software should enjoy the best career opportunities.
