Job duties vary for marketing communications managers, but typically center around the control of a few key advertising and public relations roles. Marketing communication managers must develop or refine a communications strategy, which includes the branding of a company or client. Another common duty at this level is to identify opportunities for customer research and to implement these data gathering and targeting initiatives. After research is completed, marketing communication managers may work with product design and production teams to coordinate the refine of old products or the creation of new products.
Unlike lower-level marketing and communications professionals, managers often spend much of their time working directly with clients, helping to determine their goals. They then help lower-level marketing professionals to bring these goals to life.

Typically a bachelor's degree in marketing, advertising or communication is all the educational needed. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) notes however, that many marketing management positions are filled from within a company by professionals who have worked as non-managerial professionals. Even if a worker is not promoted from within the company, most employers expect applicants to have at least three years of prior experience developing strategic communications in business-to-business or business-to-consumer environment.
