Essential Information

Marketing designers develop the promotional materials - both print and digital - for a variety of companies. Marketing design programs prepare students to use technical skills to refine a business' graphic communications with the public. Many graphic designers need at least a bachelor's degree to find work, although a certificate or associate's degree in marketing design could prepare individuals for entry-level positions in promotions, production, marketing or design. Traditional and online training options are both available for an associate's degree, and online programs with flexible time limits are available for one-year certificate programs.

Certificate in Marketing Design

Students gain technical proficiency in image composition, corporate branding and color theory in order to execute their own creative ideas and translate a company's needs into a finished product. Because the design process is often collaborative, students work on projects that cover different aspects of communication. Students learn to design logos, create layouts for various types of applications and compose illustrations using vector art techniques. Training programs include work in:

  • Aesthetics
  • Concept development
  • Identity design
  • Photo retouching
  • Typography

Associate of Applied Science in Marketing Design

A high school diploma is typically required for entry to a two-year associate's degree program. As preparation for design positions within a large marketing team environment, students learn about customer service, accounting, marketing and sales. Programs train students to prepare news releases, utilize graphic design software and organize publicity events like press conferences. Generally, these programs cover the following topics:

  • Business law
  • Communications writing
  • Consumer behavior
  • Market research
  • Web design

Employment Outlook and Salary Information

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) anticipated a 3% increase overall in the number of employed graphic designers from 2018 to 2028, but it can vary greatly by industry. The greatest increase is expected in computer systems design and related services. All graphic designers earned an annual median wage of $50,370 in 2018, according to the BLS.

Popular Career Options

The BLS stated that as of May 2018, there were 217,810 graphic design professionals working in the United States. Graduates of associate degree programs may be able to find internships and work their way into positions such as:

  • Graphic designer
  • Marketing coordinator
  • Production artist
  • Website administrator

Continuing Education

Marketing design programs past the certificate and associate levels are rare; students interested in earning a bachelor's degree can apply to 4-year programs in either graphic design or marketing. Degree completion programs may be available for students who are transferring from associate degree programs.

A marketing design degree can be used in careers such as graphic designer, production artist or marketing coordinator. Coursework helps students obtain skills involved with marketing, accounting, communication and illustration.
