MBA in Global Management: Degree Overview

Master of Business Administration (MBA) programs in global management allow students to gain skills in dealing with diversity in business, managing a multicultural employee base and communicating across language barriers.

Essential Information

An MBA program with a global management emphasis can help students gain an advanced understanding of international economics and the effective management of multinational companies. Students may complete projects and internships; some programs offer overseas study opportunities.

To enter an MBA program, students are typically required to hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited university, hold a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or above and meet score requirements on the Graduation Management Admission Test (GMAT). It's also common for schools to require completion of undergraduate courses in business topics at a specific GPA. Work experience may be required as well.

Master of Business Administration with a Specialization in Global Management

An MBA with a specialization in global management allows students to focus on the specialty area of international business. In a global management program, students may take courses in economics, political science and business history, all with an international focus. Courses can also focus on the laws and policies of different nations and international relations. Many programs will also include a foreign language requirement, with students being required to complete courses in a foreign language of their choice; immersion and overseas study or internship opportunities are also common. Global management courses may include:

  • Comparative market systems
  • Diplomatic strategy
  • Ethnic and race relations
  • Global trade and finance
  • International politics/law
  • Accounting/Economics

Popular Career Options

Graduates of these programs can be prepared to enter into top executive management positions. Positions in global companies or companies expanding into the global market may provide the most job opportunities for graduates. With an MBA in Global Management, students are prepared to work in fields such as:

  • Sales
  • Management
  • Consulting

Employment Outlook and Salary Info

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment growth for sales managers is projected to be 5% from 2014-2024. A 14% rise in opportunities is expected for management analysts or consultants and a 6% increase for top executives is projected over the same time period, the BLS further reports.

Salary information provided by the BLS shows that chief executives earned an average annual wage of $185,850 as of May 2015. Figures released by the BLS at the same time indicate that the average annual wage for sales managers was $130,400, while management consultants averaged $91,770.

Continuing Education

After completing an MBA in global management, graduates may continue on to the doctoral level to earn a Ph.D. in International Management. Unlike MBA programs, Ph.D. options are typically geared more directly towards academic pursuits, such as research and teaching, rather than towards enhancing real-world management skills. Areas of study may include international strategies, organization and management.

An MBA program in global management focuses on research and advanced business skills. These programs can lead to a number of careers in sales and executive management, as well as management analysis. Graduates can also further their education with an international management Ph.D.
