Oct 13, 2019

Essential Information

A Master of Science in Information Systems Engineering can provide students with a background in systems analysis, computer hardware and systems design. Throughout this program, students often learn to manage systems, support current technology, complete integration and administrative assignments and manage future systems. Specialization options include digital government, digital health, information security, and entrepreneurship. Prior to graduation, students are expected to develop and present a thesis or senior project.

In order to apply, prospective students must have a bachelor's degree and submit a personal essay. International students must also submit TOEFL scores.

Master of Science in Information Systems Engineering

MS programs in information systems engineering allow students to investigate system design and analysis, enterprise architectures and integration, leadership principles and business strategies. Specific courses include distributed computing theory, robotics, and user-centered design; students may also explore topics such as:

  • Research methodology
  • Strategic information systems
  • Secure computer systems
  • Software systems design
  • Networks and computer communications
  • Data structures and algorithms

Popular Career Options

Graduates of this degree program can find employment opportunities in many areas, including banking, manufacturing, education and government. Master's holders may find career titles like:

  • Network systems administrator
  • Systems manager
  • Network service engineer
  • Server administrator
  • Database analyst

Employment Outlook and Salary Information

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimates job growth from 2018 through 2028 to be at a rate of 11% for managers of computers and information systems ( Over that same time range, growth for network and computer systems administrators is expected to be at a rate of 5%, and growth for database administrators is expected to be 9%.

According to May 2018 salary figures from the BLS, the median annual salary for computer and information system managers was $142,530. For network and computer systems administrators, the median annual wage was $82,050, and for database administrator it was $90,070.

Continuing Education Information

Graduates of this MS degree program may decide to enter a doctoral degree program to learn advanced skills and become involved in research or teaching at the college level. Certificate programs allow graduates to gain training in specialized areas. For example, a graduate may enter into a systems engineering certificate program that prepares them to sit for the Associate Systems Engineering Professional (ASEP) and Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) exams offered by the International Council on Systems Engineering.

Through MS programs in information systems engineering, students develop the advanced technological skills they need for upper-level careers in the IT field.
