Essential Information

Mastercam is one of the oldest computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided machining (CAM) programs on the market. Technical drafter and drawing professionals who work with CAD-CAM can improve their career standing by completing a Mastercam training program. A number of private technical schools and public colleges offer Mastercam courses, sometimes as part of a larger manufacturing technology program. Enrollees learn the features and capabilities of the product with courses that cover design, wire EDM, control tool motion, user interface customization, turning and milling. They are trained how to create and adjust the attributes of tool paths and geometries instantaneously.

Mastercam Training

Most Mastercam training programs are structured to cover multiple subjects in a single course, although some might spread content over two or three courses. These programs can be completed in three months or less and require applicants to have familiarity with standard computer input devices, like a mouse and keyboard, Microsoft Windows, file manipulation and directory navigation. Some common topics are:

  • 2D design
  • 3D design
  • Solid modeling
  • Surface texturing
  • Five-axis milling
  • Wireframes

Employment Outlook and Salary Info

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicted that, for the years 2018-2028, employment of drafters, mechanical engineers and civil engineers would grow at rates of 0%, 4% and 6%, respectively. The mean salary for mechanical drafters as of 2018 was $59,010, while civil and architectural drafters earned $56,700. Mechanical engineers earned a mean salary of $92,800 and civil engineers $93,720 the same year.

Continuing Education Information

There are associate's and professional-level Mastercam certifications. The former offers exams for mill, advanced mill and lathe. The latter has exams for mill-CPgmM, lathe-CPgmT academic CpgmM and CpgmT. The National Occupational Competency Testing Institute (NOCTI), which has a partnership with Mastercam, also offers a certification exam.

Mastercam training programs can be completed quickly and offer instruction in such topics as 2D and 3D design, solid modeling and surface texturing. Completion of this training helps individuals working in engineering, machining and drafting careers.
