Open since 1970, Cosumnes River College is one of our four community colleges that make up the Los Rios Community College District. Students can choose from more than 60 career training programs, in addition to courses that will transfer to other degree programs. Medical assisting studies at Cosumnes River College include three certificate programs and an associate's degree program.
The curriculum of the Certificate of Achievement in Medical Assisting addresses topics in medical terminology, medical office procedures and human diseases. This program culminates with a practicum experience where students perform tasks such as drawing blood and administering injections in a healthcare setting. Those enrolled in the Certificate of Proficiency in Medical Assisting, Medical Insurance Billing program learn about medical billing procedures and coding techniques, including ICD-CM coding. Students interested more in office than clinical work can pursue the Certificate of Achievement in Medical Assisting, Administrative, which provides study in patient billing, insurance claim filing, HIPAA regulations and medical office reception duties.
Students in the Associate of Science in Medical Assisting program are exposed to a medically focused curriculum that covers subjects that includes the same coursework found in the medical assisting certificate program. Students also get hands-on training in a variety of medical procedures, and the program culminates with a practicum capstone experience.
