Essential Information

Two-year associate's degree programs in biomedical equipment technology offer a fundamental overview of the technical systems that make up biomedical equipment, including electrical systems, electronics, digital circuits and microprocessors. Medical equipment is increasingly operated by computer systems, so computer science and technology often make up a large component of any biomedical equipment technology degree program. A high school diploma or the equivalent is required for entry.

Experienced medical equipment technicians may earn various professional certifications when they pass qualifying examinations.

Associate's Degree Programs in Biomedical Equipment Technology

Most programs include some courses that introduce students to the medical field and prepare them to work in hospitals and healthcare organizations. In addition to studying technical systems and physics, students learn medical terminology and basic human anatomy. Courses that provide training in this field teach:

  • Principles of electronics
  • Analog circuits
  • Applied physics
  • Microprocessor fundamentals
  • Biomedical equipment practicum
  • Industrial controls

Employment Outlook and Salary Info

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), medical equipment repair professionals held about 41,060 positions across the United States in 2015. The BLS predicts an average job growth rate of 6% for medical equipment repairers between 2014 and 2024. The BLS also states in 2015 that these workers earned an annual median salary of $46,340.

Continuing Education

There are three types of certification that medical equipment technicians can earn from the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation. These include Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician, Certified Laboratory Equipment Specialist and Certified Radiology Equipment Specialists. Professional experience and passing scores on an examination are the qualifiers of any title. Professionals who wish to become certified in a particular form of medical equipment, such as radiology equipment, might consider enrolling in additional courses in that subject to adequately prepare for the exam.

Training in medical equipment maintenance is available to students pursuing an associate's degree in biomedical equipment technology. After the program, graduates are able to identify a variety of problems in biomedical equipment, including those that might exist in analog circuits and industrial controls.
