Medical Technology Repair Degrees: Program Overviews

Students interested in earning a degree in medical technology may choose from associate's and bachelor's degree programs. Some complete a pre-engineering associate's degree prior to a bachelor's degree program in biomedical engineering.

Essential Information

Biomedical and medical equipment repairers must be able to maintain, operate, and repair sophisticated medical equipment essential to the healthcare field. A two-year associate's or a four-year bachelor's degree program in biomedical equipment technology can provide students with these skills while also teaching them about preventive maintenance and how to perform safety inspections. Students will need only a high school education to enroll in these programs, with a strong understanding of science and mathematics recommended.

Associate's Degree Programs in Biomedical Equipment Technology

Program enrollees attend lectures and labs to learn medical basics, equipment types, and troubleshooting methods. The associate's degree programs might also serve as pre-engineering programs designed for students who intend to enter bachelor's degree programs in engineering. These are some topics students might explore:

  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Hospital safety
  • Computer upgrade
  • Digital electronics

Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Engineering

Many engineering programs offer a concentration in biomedical technology engineering. Applicants must have a thorough grounding in applied math and chemistry. Biomedical technology engineering programs may pull knowledge from the medical and engineering fields, requiring the two colleges to work together.

Along with traditional engineering courses, such as thermodynamics and fluid mechanics, schools often encourage personal research and internship experiences. Some schools offer cooperative opportunities with medical and technology companies. Program course topics may include:

  • Electrical networks
  • Instrument design
  • Biomedical engineering design
  • Physiology
  • Biomaterials

Popular Careers

A bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering technology can provide students with the knowledge necessary to not only install and repair biomedical equipment, but design such equipment as well. Graduates with this degree can go on to work as biomedical engineers in specialties such as medical imagery, genetic engineering, biomechanics, and bioinstrumentation. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), although employment is predicted to rise 23% over the 2014-2024 decade for biomedical engineers, this faster-than-average growth will result in only 5,100 because of it being such a specialized occupation.

Employment Outlook and Salary Information

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projected that employment of medical equipment repairers would grow about 6% from 2014-2024. This growth rate was about average for all careers. This job growth was attributed to an aging population's need for increased medical services. Technological advancements also play a part in job availability.

As of May 2015, the BLS reported, medical equipment repair median wages were about $46,340 a year. Those who worked in the electronic and precision equipment repair industry and in hospitals earned higher wages on average, while the health and personal care goods and consumer goods rental industries tended to pay lower wages on average.

An associate's or bachelor's degree in biomedical equipment technology or biomedical engineering prepares students for a number of jobs in healthcare, from medical technology repairer to biomedical engineer.
