Essential Information

In pursuit of a Doctor of Philosophy in military history, students may analyze the causes and effects of warfare from ancient times through the current age. As such, these programs don't allow students to specialize in one region or era. Most of the instruction occurs through readings, discussions and lectures, and students usually need to complete a dissertation.

Applicants typically need to hold a master's degree in history or a related field to qualify for admission to a military history Ph.D. program. Some schools require each applicant to describe his or her research interests to the faculty in order to find a member willing to be the applicant's research adviser.
