Multimedia artists in all industries earned a median annual salary of $63,970 in May 2015, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The movie and TV industry was the most common employment sector and among the highest-paying, the BLS reported; however, more than half of multimedia artists were self-employed or freelancers. Advertisers and software manufacturers, including video game companies, also reported high employment of multimedia specialists.

Job Description

Multimedia specialists might work for private businesses, organizations or government divisions that are in need of content for entertainment, marketing, training and presentations to investors, stakeholders, potential customers or the public. Multimedia specialists design, develop and deliver aesthetically pleasing and engaging media packages, including graphics, photography, video and sound. Companies might use these converged media forms for websites, portable apps, kiosk displays, advertisements or in-house tutorials. Multimedia specialists also might have a hand in creating films, television programs, video games, computer software, e-books and interactive music experiences.

Requirements

Multimedia specialists need to stay current on new and advancing forms of media. Working knowledge of video production, editing and photography software is also necessary.

Often, a bachelor's degree in multimedia design, art or graphic design will be necessary. However, in some cases, an associate's degree will suffice. In certain situations, demonstrated skill and experience will be acceptable in place of a degree. Common coursework for multimedia design and similar degree programs includes Web design, video production, digital photography and computer graphics. Working knowledge of programming and coding is also helpful.

Multimedia specialists can expect growth at a rate comparable to the national average of all occupations. However, a stimulating workplace and good salaries attract many applicants. Developing a specialty in a particular form of media or visual technique can increase a job seeker's appeal to employers.
