Neptune, New Jersey, had a population of approximately 27,720 at the time of the 2014 U.S. Census. The township had a median household income of $63,881 for the years 2010-2014, which was below the statewide median of $72,062 but above the nationwide median of $53,482. As of 2011, Neptune's home county of Monmouth was the 38th highest-income county in the country, based in large part on tourism.

Neptune encompasses a number of unincorporated communities, including the seaside community of Ocean Grove, located along the famed Jersey Shore, and the riverside community of Shark River Hills. Visitors can enjoy the thriving nightlife and ample dining and shopping options of Sea View Island or admire the Victorian architecture in Ocean Grove. Opportunities for fishing abound along the Shark River, while Shark River Park offers additional outdoor activities, including shuffle board and horseshoe pitching in the summer, ice skating and cross country skiing in the winter, and hiking year-round.

Educational Opportunities Near Neptune

Monmouth University in West Long Branch is located approximately six miles from Neptune. This private university, which grants certificates and associate's through doctoral degrees, was ranked 36th among regional universities in the North by U.S. News & World Report in 2016. It had nearly 6,400 students, including more than 4,600 undergraduates, as of Fall 2014.

Other nonprofit colleges and universities within a 25-mile radius of Neptune include Brookdale Community College in Lincroft, Georgian Court University in Lakewood and the Monmouth County Vocational School District in Freehold, as well as several private schools offering Talmudic studies.

Neptune Economy

Jersey Shore University Medical Center, an affiliate of the prestigious Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, is the top employer in Neptune township, with nearly 3,000 employees. This hospital serves central and southern New Jersey, with more than 650 beds for patients. Other top employers in Neptune include the Asbury Park Press/Gannett, the Neptune Board of Education, AIG and the township itself.
