Online Classes in Appliance Repair

Here we'll take a look at some common online classes in appliance repair.

An Electrical Appliance Testing class reviews the fundamentals of electrical systems and introduces students to appliance solenoids and motors. Learning modules cover such topics as the testing of single and combination appliance circuits, as well as the repair of split-phase, capacitor-start and magnetic direct-current motors. Additional information on the advancements in appliance technology may be included.

In a Small Motor-Driven Appliances class students examine the basics of repairing motors in small heating and cooling appliances, small cooking appliances and electrical power tools. They also learn to dismantle gear-driven motors and repair line cords and plugs. Additional learning modules on lawn and garden equipment repair may be included.

A Large Motor-Driven Appliances class, on the other hand, focuses on the testing and repair of larger electrical home appliances, including stoves and ovens, washers, dryers and dishwashers. Class modules include techniques for inspecting parts and circuits, as well as repairing trash compactors and garbage disposals. A digital multimeter and multimeter operating manual are usually provided for this portion of the class.

Students in a Microwave Appliance class are introduced to the basics of microwave oven repair, including the theories of electromagnetic energy and its use in heat conduction. Topics include microwave assembly, troubleshooting, repair and operation. Supplemental information on the testing and repair of cordless appliances may be included.

An Air Conditioning and Refrigeration class provides students with the opportunity to study testing and repair procedures for larger motor-driven appliances, including domestic refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners. An overview of major mechanical parts and operating principles, advances in refrigeration technology and humidity control appliances is also included.

A Refrigerator Troubleshooting and Repair class covers more in-depth topics related to refrigerator operation and repair. Topics of study include the refrigeration cycle, properties of refrigerant gasses and defrost systems.

Students in an Electric Heating Appliances and Fans class learn to repair electric room heaters as well as power ventilators and ceiling fans. The curriculum also covers electric irons and other appliances that have line cords and plugs.

Lastly, an Electric Washing Machines class allows students to focus on the individual components and circuits from which electric washing machines are comprised. After gaining a basic understanding of these types of washing machines, students learn to diagnose problems and make repairs.

Program Information

Appliance repair technicians perform diagnostic tests and complete repairs on various types of home appliances. Due to the hands-on nature of the job, training is usually offered in classroom or workplace settings. However, some for-profit career schools and public education providers offer online home-study programs in appliance repair that can lead to diplomas or certificates. Successful course completion qualifies students to work for appliance dealers and repair shops or to start their own appliance repair businesses.

For individuals who want to become skilled at appliance repair, there are online courses that provide valuable technical instruction in the servicing of home appliances that can include refrigerators, washing machines, ovens and stoves.
