Online Associate Degree in Spanish: Program Overviews

Dec 03, 2019

Essential Information

A small number of schools offer online associate's degree programs in Spanish; hybrid programs that offer some courses online are more common. Students interested in honing their Spanish-speaking skills at the associate's level may want to consider on-campus options, which are frequently offered at community colleges. Students can also pursue undergraduate certificates and bachelor's degrees in Spanish, which are more widely available online than associate's programs.

Associate's Degree in Spanish

An online associate's degree program in Spanish aims to impart an understanding of the Spanish language in its spoken and written forms and to introduce students to Latino culture. Coursework consists of vocabulary memorization and verb conjugation, speaking practice, readings and lectures. A high school diploma or GED are the minimum requirements to enroll in an online associate's degree program. Online Spanish programs at this degree level are extremely rare; students may be able to complete general education requirements online, but they may need to attend a community college for the Spanish courses.

Program Information and Requirements

Online associate's degree programs in Spanish are a hybrid of online and traditional classroom study. Only a limited number of courses are available via the Internet. Assignments typically have set deadlines, but within that constraint, students may work on them at their convenience. An associate's degree is typically completed in two years.

Students need a computer and an Internet connection, preferably broadband, to participate in an online program. Course materials and assignments are generally managed via Blackboard.

Course Topics

An online associate's degree program in Spanish includes a general education component and a set of core courses in the major subject. Language courses are taken sequentially, and courses on Hispanic culture are interspersed within the program.

Beginning Spanish

This course is the first in a series that immerses students in the language. Students practice reading, writing and speaking Spanish.

Intermediate Spanish

This is a second-level course that continues where the beginning course leaves off. Students work with and attempt to master more complicated oral and written material.

Latin American Civilization

Students explore historic and contemporary Latino culture in this course. All assignments are conducted in Spanish.

English to Spanish Translation

This course develops skills for translating written Spanish into written English and vice versa. Students are given various texts to translate and are graded on grammar and accuracy of the translation.

Career Information

An online associate's degree in Spanish by itself provides limited, entry-level career prospects at best. It may have more value to people who are established in a career because Spanish is an increasingly useful second language in the U.S. Jobs in which knowledge of Spanish may be useful include court interpreter, tour guide, customer support representative and immigration officer.

According to in 2019, tour guides earned a median salary of $29,282, customer support representatives earned $41,332 and immigration officers earned a median $60,534 per year.

Continuing Education Information

Students who earn online associate's degrees in Spanish may be able to transfer their credits to a 4-year program and work toward bachelor's degrees. However, online bachelor's degree programs in Spanish are just about as rare as associate's degree programs. Enrollment in a traditional or hybrid program may be necessary to achieve this goal.

An online associate's degree program in Spanish is extremely rare but available. Courses discuss contemporary culture in addition to language and prepare graduates for a limited number of entry-level positions.
