Essential Information

A management information system integrates business and computer technology, helping companies organize, plan, and manage more effectively. A Bachelor of Science in Management Information Systems (MIS) is offered fully online by some schools, allowing the student to take classes while continuing to work full-time.

This distance learning four-year program can also be found in a hybrid format that combines on-campus and online classes. Since the management information systems program includes a technology component, students may be required to purchase additional hardware or software to complete coursework. This program may also offer students the option to concentrate in a field of information technology, like data networking or information assurance.

Common Courses

Curriculum for this B.S. program includes a variety of business, mathematics, and computer science courses. This MIS program usually lasts four years. Prerequisites are typically required for upper-level courses.

This class offers a basic introduction to common accounting principles and methods, as they relate to both business and technology. Tracking and managing purchases and sales, tax reporting, cash flow, and spreadsheet analyses are additional topics.

Database Management

The student will learn to create, modify, and query a database. Security issues, comparing and contrasting various database models, and learning different file management techniques are also introduced in the class.

Computer Networking

Essential networking skills, including application-layer, transport-layer, and network-layer concepts and applications, will be taught. Routing, Ethernet, connectionless vs. connection-oriented services, transmission media, and LAN topologies are also covered.

This course covers the basic rules and concepts of probability, sampling procedures, combinatorics, raw and grouped data, distributions, and specific discrete random variables.

The importance of marketing as it relates to the business world is discussed in this course. Students will be taught the marketing 'mix', understand factors that influence decision-making, and learn about product life cycles. Developing viable marketing plans and analyzing case studies are also part of the course.

Learning Environment

As classes are taught online, students must have access to a computer with Internet connection. Students can interact online with both the instructor as well as fellow classmates via e-mail, chat rooms, and message board discussions.

Given the nature of the degree program, students will most likely be required to obtain additional hardware and/or software for the MIS degree, possibly at an additional cost beyond tuition expenses. Reviewing the technology requirements section of each class prior to its start date is critical to ensure that all necessary components are obtained.

Career Statistics

Per the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (, job prospects are expected to be excellent for computer and information systems managers, with employment projected to grow 11% from 2018-2028. While wages can vary greatly by specialty and level of responsibility, the median annual wage of computer and information systems managers in May 2018 was $142,530.

Continuing Education

While there are no mandatory continuing education requirements, those in the field will need to continually stay abreast of new technology as it becomes introduced to the industry.
