Online Courses Related to Baking

Here is a sample of some commonly offered online baking courses.

  • In a Sanitation and Safety course, students are introduced to the basic theories of safety and sanitation and its relevance in the hospitality industry. This course covers topics such as safety and sanitary codes and regulations, food-borne illnesses, personal hygiene, care and use of baking equipment, and the implementation of sanitary procedures in the workplace.
  • A Food Purchasing course analyzes the types and quantities of ingredients to buy. Students learn to consider factors such as recipe yield, cost control, supplier relationships, and inventory management when planning purchases of baking staples like flour and sugar. Predicting what stock a kitchen will need based on the popularity of previous menu items is also introduced.
  • In the Menu Design course, aspiring bakers learn how to plan a menu, with attention to both choosing appropriate food items to offer and considering the aesthetic aspects of menu design. Food trends, nutritional concerns, layouts, recipe costs, and customer demographics are all examined. Assignments for online students may involve creating sample professional menus.
  • A Hospitality Management course looks at the business side of operating a bakery or kitchen and supervising employees. The topics covered may include promoting a business, maintaining staff schedules and streamlining food production. Some basic information about accounting may also be included.
  • In a Fundamentals of Baking and Pastries course, students will learn basics of baking, such as baking mathematics, measurements, and recipe conversion. The course will also cover key ingredients, and teach students how to check for quality in different baking products. The course will also provide students with necessary techniques foundational to pastry making.
  • A Sugarcraft and Specialty Cakes course teaches students how to create specialty cakes and other desserts using sugarcraft mediums like gum paste, fondant, marzipan, gingerbread, modeling chocolate and sugar. Emphasis is placed on visual design and overall presentation.
  • In a Sustainability course, bakers learn how to prepare perishable foods in an environmentally friendly way. That way they can be transported for long distances without harming the planet or compromising safety, flavor, or nutritional value.

Program Information

Baking courses are generally offered through pastry arts programs. Students learn how to bake breads, pies, cakes, and other desserts. Programs might lead to a Baking and Pastry Arts Certificate, Associate of Applied Science in Baking and Pastry Arts or a Bachelor of Arts in Baking Pastry and Arts, among similar options. Students interested in studying baking for personal enrichment may find non-credit baking arts courses available online, but fully online certificate programs in baking are rare.

Although the hands-on nature of baking makes an online program impractical, students can take courses in certain topics online. These might include baking terminology, food safety regulations, entrepreneurship, and bakery operations. The majority of the program will likely require on-campus training in a kitchen laboratory. Many programs also include on-the-job training through internships. Graduates might find employment in bakeries, supermarkets, restaurants, and hospitality businesses.
