Essential Information

Online bachelor's degree programs in computer-aided design (CAD) are not available. Online bachelor's degree programs in mechanical engineering usually include training in CAD technologies, however. These programs may be offered entirely online, but more commonly require students to complete laboratory courses on campus. Online study usually allows students to view lessons and complete assignments as their schedules permit, within an established time-frame. They will need a computer with a fast Internet connection, as well as AutoCAD software. Students should make sure any program they are considering is accredited by ABET, which supervises engineering education programs.

Prerequisite courses may include physics, basic work in CAD, chemistry, and algebra. In a mechanical engineering program, students learn to use CAD through the study of engineering design, modeling, machine design, sketching and visualization. They may also take courses in thermal science, material strength and fluid power.

Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering

There are mechanical engineering bachelor's degree programs available that regularly utilize CAD technologies, preparing graduates for a career designing and producing mechanical devices like tools and engines. Emphasis is often placed on both the application and theory of CAD, as well as the current industry-standard CAD technologies. Potential CAD topics covered include studies of technical graphics, dimensioning, sketching, visualization, wide frame transformations and solid modeling. Additional areas of study include thermal science, production planning, mechanical component design and material strength.

Information and Requirements

Prior to entering the core mechanical engineering program, students may be required to have completed courses in physics, manufacturing processes, fundamental CAD concepts, algebra and chemistry. A mechanical engineering program may require students to complete certain laboratory courses on-campus. Students can take exams, view recorded classroom lectures and submit assignments online. They may also access writing, tutoring, advising and library services online. Students may also need access to AutoCAD software.

Sample Bachelor's-Level CAD Coursework

A mechanical engineering bachelor's degree program covering CAD features a curriculum combining studies of math, science and design principles.

Engineering Design

This course explores the fundamentals of managing engineering design projects. Topics covered include market analysis, project planning, thermal design techniques and concurrent engineering.

Machine Design

This course explores the various elements of both machines and tools. Gears, working stress, bonded joints, shafts and flywheels are some of the elements covered.

Career Information

Graduates of an online bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering are prepared for careers in automotive, manufacturing and aircraft design. They should be prepared to work in the management, design, installation, evaluation, testing and manufacturing of various mechanical processes. According to Payscale.com, entry-level CAD professionals can expect to earn a median salary of $39,639, as of 2016.

All states require licensing for mechanical engineers who sell their services to the public. New graduates can obtain their initial license by passing an exam. After working for a few years, they can qualify for full licensure.

Online bachelor's programs related to computer-aided design (CAD) train students to use software and technology to create the visual drafts needed for tool, engine and machine projects. Graduates will be eligible for work in mechanical processing.
