Online Computer Drafting Training Programs

Essential Information

Online training in computer drafting is available in a variety of different formats, including tutorials, standalone courses, certificate programs and both undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Majors with courses in this field include building information modeling and architectural drafting. Additionally, some companies may offer training in computer-aided drafting (CAD) using specific software programs. Another educational option that covers computer drafting is a Master of Science (MS) in Computer Systems Engineering.

Short Courses and Tutorials in Computer Drafting

A number of different resources are available for students interested in self-teaching-based online computer drafting programs. Some of these resources are available from knowledge bases or communities that offer free tutorials to the public. Others are courses that are available for a fee, usually from commercial organizations that specialize in training for students of computer aided drawing and machining. These courses may be supplemented by various forms of media, such as videos or flash demonstrations, or even interactive tutorials.

Also available from a variety of sources are short, focused courses in computer aided drafting (CAD), or, more often, in CAD using a particular brand of software. Such courses are commonly available from dedicated training companies and even some colleges and universities. Some of these courses end in a certification or learner's certificate or may provide the knowledge required for a professional certification.

Computer Drafting Degrees and Certificates

Several colleges offer online certificate or degree programs that focus on or involve computer drafting. Often, certificates are available through 1-year vocational or technical programs. These programs usually provide classes not only in the use of computer software for drafting purposes, but in the geometry and mathematics, at times physics and, depending on the application, other disciplines necessary to use the software to effectively design various mechanical parts or even structures.

Degree programs that incorporate computer drafting are normally associate's degrees in subjects like CAD, building information modeling or architectural drafting. Higher level degrees with computer drafting components, such as the Master of Science in Computer Systems Engineering, do not normally focus directly on computer drafting, but include it as a concentration or emphasis, as well as coursework in architecture and engineering.

Depending on educational needs and future goals, students can choose between a wide range of programs that cover computer drafting, from courses that focus solely on the subject to broad degree programs that include studies in other construction or IT-related subjects as well.
