Online Computer Technician Training and Career Education

Essential Information

Both aspiring and working computer technicians can enroll in online career education or training programs to gain job skills or prepare for professional certification. Fully online degree programs in this field are rare due to the hands-on and technical nature of the training. Program levels available include continuing education courses and certificates. Students may need a certain computer operating system for online requirements.

Continuing and Adult Education Courses

Some colleges offer continuing or adult education programs in PC maintenance and repair that include computer technician training. Courses may prepare students for entry-level professional certification exams, like CompTIA A+ certification, or fulfill prerequisites for associate degree study in a relevant field. These training programs may culminate with a certificate of completion.

Some online training programs are only available to students with computers running certain operating systems. Programs may offer downloadable course materials, chat sessions and online discussion boards for student and instructor use. For students who can obtain a second computer to take apart and fix, there may be optional hands-on activities that students can carry out independently.

Common Coursework

The curriculum covers the parts of a computer and how they work, like CPUs and motherboards, memory, expansion cards, bus structures and operating systems. The process for connecting and networking computers is also covered, along with basic troubleshooting, network and computer security, upgrades and safety.

Professional Certificate Training

Individuals can enroll in online certificate programs designed to prepare them for general professional or vendor-specific certification exams, such as those offered by Microsoft, Cisco Systems and CompTIA. These exams certify that computer technicians are qualified to manage networked computing environments utilizing a Windows-based server. Some certification training programs are intended for those who already hold entry-level credentials, like CompTIA A+. Programs may be offered asynchronously and feature open enrollment. In general, the curriculum is specifically designed to discuss the topics covered by the exam.

Students interested in earning a certificate or continuing education courses in computer technician training can do so online, even though the availability of those programs are rare. Students may be required to complete hands-on activities in order to complete these programs.
