Online Furniture Design Courses

Here are some of the common online courses in woodworking and furniture design.

The History of Furniture Design course is a furniture design history class which illustrates the social, cultural, technological, and economic influences that have affected the industry. Many courses start with ancient designs and ultimately discuss the Industrial Revolution's impact on the design of furniture.

In the Contemporary Furniture Design course, the student learns the principles of modern furniture development. Classes discuss the evolution of modern design and how it applies to current trends. Some topics covered are form and function.

In the Drawing Digital Designs course, online instructors teach students computer software techniques to create designs and plans for projects. Individuals become familiar with commonly used design software. Students learn to make a representative model of the final product by using 3-dimensional computer drafting.

In the Designing Furniture course students consider material use, wood choice, and function to create original designs. Evaluation of the design may be based on usability, safety, and function.

The Basics of Joinery - Three Joints course allows students learn one of the basics of woodworking: how to properly join two pieces of wood to form a useful object. The course covers the use of hand tools to create dado, dovetail, and mortise joints. These are skills basic to all woodworking.

In the Finishes and Topcoats course, students learn how to select an appropriate finish or topcoat for a woodworking project or piece of furniture. They also receive technical instruction in the application of these finishes as well as the reparation of dents and the use of primers and sealers.

The Woodworking Safety course covers the basic safety precautions that must be taken when working with wood and making furniture. Students learn how to safely use hand tools, power tools, measuring tools, and electrical equipment.

Program Levels

Online courses in woodworking and furniture design are not common. Woodworking, especially, is a hands-on activity, a skill that must be acquired by actual practice. But a number of art and design schools offer online associate's, bachelor's, and master's degree programs in interior architecture and design, which may include the subjects of woodworking and furniture design. There are also online certificate and diploma programs available and several organizations and educational institutions offer enrichment courses that are taught wholly or in part online.

Program Topics

There are online courses that can prepare students by teaching the theory of subjects like finishing and layout techniques, wood selection, and how to maintain, repair, or refinish furniture. Enrichment courses, on the other hand, often include video instructions on topics such as the basics of joinery, woodworking tools, or even examples of how to construct a particular piece of furniture, such as a blanket chest.

Although the availability of online woodworking courses is limited due to the hands-on nature of the field, there are a variety of online courses that can familiarize students with materials and processes used in the field, as well as key furniture design concepts.
