Executive Master of Business Administration

Online Executive Master of Business Administration programs are geared toward corporate management and economics on a global scale. They are designed to prepare students for leadership positions in fields such as corporate finance, marketing, managerial economics and information technology. Prior to enrolling in an Executive Master of Business Administration program, individuals should already have a background in business administration or a related area. A bachelor's degree, three letters of recommendation and scores received from a recent Graduate Management Admissions Test typically need to be submitted along with an application.

Program Information and Requirements

Executive Master of Business Administration programs may be taken entirely online, although some programs require students to have one or more on-site residencies in order to undergo more intensive study and to interact with classmates. There are also online Executive Master of Business Administration programs with study abroad options.

Online Executive Master of Business Administration programs are taken via virtual classrooms which utilize audio, video and chat capabilities to allow students to access lectures and instruction at their leisure. Students should, therefore, have a computer with up-to-date hardware and software and a high-speed Internet connection. Because archived files, articles, assignments and other documents are usually archived for the student's convenience, computers may be required to have software such as Adobe Reader or JavaScript.

Course Topics

Executive Master of Business Administration courses are designed to explain the business world in both a national and international capacity. At the graduate level, students have completed general education requirements and may focus solely on the core courses required to earn their master's degrees.

Managerial Accounting

Executive Master of Business Administration programs are geared toward advanced professional roles; at this level, managers, directors and officers are expected to grasp all aspects of business--including cost analysis, budget and payroll. This class emphasizes cost data, standard costs and interpreting costs with regard to job orders.

Management Science

Lessons examine quantitative methods with both probabilistic and deterministic methods. Although this class is largely based in mathematic theory, realistic applications are also heavily featured, and students are consistently asked to relate principles to practice.

Global Marketing

Participants study the effects of marketing on the global environment. Emphasis is placed on understanding the needs and practices of the international buyer.

Information Technology

Students learn about the data systems required to manage a competitive global corporation. While themes are often broadly covered, some programs offer more focused options which tie lessons back to their practical applications in a professional business environment.

Global Economics

This course expounds on trade development among nations. It covers such topics as exchange rates and trade barriers.

Career Information

There are a number of career paths that may be taken by Executive Master of Business Administration program graduates. Some may become financial analysts and work for either buyers or sellers. Earning a designation by the Chartered Financial Analyst Institute enhances a financial analyst's reputation and global perceptions. While the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) expects a faster-than-average job growth for financial analysts, it also warns that competition for available positions is heavy (www.bls.gov).

Another career choice for degree-holders is operations manager, a professional responsible for running a corporation's daily activities. The BLS predicts keen competition in this position since the jobs are typically prestigious and pay well. Those with considerable experience or training in the global economy, as well as knowledge of several languages, are expected to have greater career opportunities.

For students who have already completed a bachelor's degree and held a job for several years, pursuing an online executive master's in business may be a good option, as it will allow them to continue working and hone their business skills.
