Bachelor's Degree in Health Promotion

In an online bachelor's degree program in health promotion, students take courses in physical fitness, nutrition, community health and health behavior. Through these courses, students acquire skills that will enable them to promote community health and well-being. Concepts cover ways to implement health and disease prevention programs, techniques for promoting health in a diverse population and ways to assess the success of those efforts. To enroll in this program, students must have at least a high school diploma or GED equivalent. There are very few online programs in health promotion, though bachelor's degrees in related fields, such as public health and the health sciences, are available through online programs.

Program Information and Requirements

The online bachelor's degree program in health promotion typically takes about four years to complete. Students can take all of the courses online, but some schools may include additional distance learning methods, such as video-conferencing or telephone chats. An internship in health promotion, which must be completed in person, is also required by most university programs. In order to access courses, students log onto a college or university's web-based application, where they can watch video lectures, interact with other students, read professors' notes and complete assignments.

Online programs require that students have a working computer and reliable Internet access. Computer software requirements include the Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Flash and Acrobat Reader.

Course Topics

Students completing this program can take courses flexibly, without regular due dates or class times, or they may attend regularly-scheduled virtual classes and turn in assignments with teacher-specified due dates.

Human Anatomy and Physiology

Through this course, students learn about common bodily systems, including the muscular and skeletal systems. They learn how the human body works and how disease and drugs affect it.

Concepts in Health Promotion

Through this course, students study the common techniques used to inform people about disease prevention and control, in order to promote health. Concepts cover ways to identify and treat disease.

Substance Abuse and Prevention

Students taking this course study the effects of drugs, tobacco and alcohol on the human body. They also learn how substance abuse affects family members and friends. Prevention strategies in substance abuse are also discussed.

Human Diseases

This course covers common diseases and the ways they affect the human body. It also covers chronic illnesses, including the risk one has of contracting a chronic illness and ways to reduce that risk.


Career Information

With a bachelor's degree in health promotion, students could find careers as health service managers or as health educators. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), students must have at least a bachelor's degree for these positions. The BLS states that the median annual salary for health educators was $51,960 as of May 2015. The median annual salary for health service managers in that same year was $94,500. The demand for both positions is expected to be faster than average between 2014 and 2024, with 12% employment growth expected for health educators and 17% employment growth projected for health service managers.

Continuing Education Information

Master's degree programs are available in health promotion and the related fields of public health and nursing. Many of these programs are available online. Some doctoral programs are also available online in these fields.

Student's who complete an online health promotion bachelor's degree program gain knowledge related to human anatomy, the effects of disease and drugs and how to relay information about disease control and prevention.
