Online Home Health Aide Schools: How to Choose

Learn about important considerations when selecting an online home health aide school. Keep reading to get an overview of the program options, delivery methods, and common online courses offered for the field of study.

As with many programs that require a great deal of hands-on learning, it is not possible to study to become a home health aide solely online, although a very small number of hybrid programs are available. Students need to ensure that a program meets their learning goals and adequately prepares them for certification within the field.

How to Select an Online Home Health Aide School

Students considering online home health aide schools must make their decision based on several key factors. Home health aide programs are not available completely online, although students can enroll in a hybrid certificate program through various colleges. This program combines online learning with hands-on training in classrooms or at healthcare facilities. Students also want to consider, along with their location, the preparatory steps to certification.

Practicums are performed under the supervision of licensed or certified health care professionals. Students may want to consider home health aide programs that allow them to complete these clinical requirements close to home.

Certification Prep

Students should make sure that an online certificate program prepares graduates for certification, which can be required by some employers. Most online home health aide programs prepare students to take voluntary, national certification examinations. The National Association for Home Care and Hospice (NAHC) offers a voluntary Home Care Aide Certification Program. Additionally, some online programs provide students with certification in First Aid, Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP) and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

Overview of a Home Health Aide Program

Online Home Health Aide Certificate

An online home health aide certificate program can be completed in as few as six weeks, but many can take six months. Students learn through online lectures, live chats and interactive discussions. A practicum, which usually consists of 20-32 hours of training, must be completed before students complete the certificate program. An online home health aide certificate program may use Blackboard or other course management systems. Typical courses cover:

  • Human development
  • Communication
  • Precautions for infection
  • Clinical theory
  • Developmental needs

Schools with Online Home Health Aide Programs

The Penn Foster Career School offers a home health aide program that can be largely studied online except for an externship that must be organized by the student. All aspects of home health aide care are covered, including communication skills, client assessment, ethics and confidentiality, and the physical science of the job. Students are required to have high-speed internet access and an up-to-date computer.

Berkel Training Institute offers an online home health aide program that includes some hands-on clinical training with a registered nurse instructor. Students need to have completed some medical tests and be able to attend a week of clinical activities. Students will learn how to aide people with chronic health conditions, those with long-term injuries or impairments, and the elderly.

Another option is to take the online home health aide training diploma program offered by Ashworth College. This program will teach students how to enable their clients to have a good quality of life and maintain their independence despite long-term health issues. Students must have an up-to-date computer for this course as mobile operating systems are not supported by the college.

While there are not a great deal of options available to those who want to study to become a home health aide online, it is still possible to complete at least some of your training via distance learning. After graduating, you will be prepared to offer the disabled and elderly effective personal care in their own homes.
