There are not a great deal of options for those looking to study homeopathy online, but a few homeopathy and alternative medicine institutions do offer hybrid or online programs. Before you choose a homeopathy school, explore some considerations like career goals and program accreditation, and then check out specific programs offered at three institutions.
How to Select an Online Homeopathy School
Homeopathy programs are uncommon in the United States, especially online, and there are no uniform standards for accreditation. While Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (ND) degree programs may include homeopathy courses, accredited programs are not offered online. Already-licensed health care professionals in some states may be able to enroll in a state-licensed online homeopathy school. Online homeopathy programs are typically offered by specialized homeopathy or alternative medicine schools.
Homeopathy is controversial because current scientific principles do not explain how a massively diluted substance could have any effect on a person's body. According to the National Institute of Health's National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, the field lacks accepted standards for education, career preparation and licensing. There are no United States Department of Education-recognized agencies that accredit homeopathy schools.
Online homeopathy programs may be licensed or approved by the state in which the school is located. This process may be less rigorous than United States Department of Education-recognized national or regional accreditation procedures.
Some schools stress homeopathic first aid and prescription skills for practicing doctors of osteopathic medicine (D.O.s) and doctors of medicine (M.D.s). Other schools emphasize business practices for homeopathic consultants or homeopathic knowledge for self-treatment. Programs may also prepare students for certification exams offered by homeopathy organizations.
Programs in certain states may prepare only physicians or other licensed health care professionals for state licensing exams. Because of this, students interested in homeopathy programs may want to explore other educational options that may require on-campus study prior to undertaking the study of homeopathy.
Online Homeopathy Education Options
Certificate in Homeopathy Consulting
Working physicians may enroll in this program in order to offer consulting services in homeopathic medicine to their clinical practice. Students may attend class through online course management applications and participate with fellow students via online forums, e-mail and instant message communications. Coursework may concentrate on:
- Anatomy and physiology
- Energetic modalities
- Holistic health business and consulting skills
Homeopathic Practitioner Certificate
Medical professionals can enroll in this program to add homeopathic care to the services they offer patients. In addition to online coursework and assignments, students may be able to access live or streaming video lectures. Though much of the coursework can be completed online, on-site clinical training or an externship may be required. Students usually study:
- Animal, plant and mineral remedies
- Homeopathic medicine preparation
- Practice management skills
- Bio-energetic medicine and biophysics
Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine
Legitimately accredited naturopathic schools don't offer the Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine degree online. Normally, this degree, which can include courses on homeopathy, requires applicants to have completed a bachelor's degree. Students may be able to complete part or all of their prerequisites online. However, the extensive laboratory and clinical training required for this degree make it impractical to earn the entire degree online. On-campus programs take about four years to complete, and courses might include:
- Therapeutic alliance
- Constitutional assessment
- Gross human anatomy
Schools with Online Programs in Homeopathy
A hybrid doctoral program in naturopathic medicine is offered by Bastyr University that combines online coursework and other virtual learning methods with hands-on classroom experience. Students can attend the Kenmore, Washington, or San Diego, California, campuses. This program is designed to give students an expert knowledge of natural health care techniques, giving them access to a research institute that is supported in part by funding from the National Institutes of Health. Students are required to have a bachelor's degree, complete prerequisite coursework, and possess some experience in or exposure to the field of naturopathic medicine.
The American University of Complementary Medicine offers a number of homeopathy-related programs, including a Homeopathic Practitioner Certificate. This certificate program can be studied partially via distance learning. It is designed to train students in homeopathic 'first aid' and teach them how to utilize homeopathic remedies to alleviate issues stemming from chronic illnesses.
A certificate in homeopathy consulting can also be earned online from the American College of Healthcare Sciences, giving students the tools to set up their own homeopathic consultancy agencies and meet all relevant state requirements. Students complete five courses and they earn the certificate in eight months.
Although there are not a great number of homeopathic programs that can be studied online, students interested in studying natural health care techniques do have some options available to them. When considering a career in homeopathy, look into the accreditation status and information regarding the curriculum's suitability for state licensing preparation.
